Origami Simulator A fantastic tool for CP verification.
Hi everyone,
I′d like to share my experience and start a discussion about a remarkable tool that some of you might already be using: the Origami Simulator.
I′ve been using it for quite a while now and consider it one of the most impressive and practical pieces of software in the origami programming space in recent years.
Its main advantage for me is the ability to quickly verify a crease pattern for structural errors without any physical folding, saving immense time and paper. My workflow integrates seamlessly with my usual design process:
- I draw the crease pattern (CP) in strong Inkscape strong.
- I export it to an SVG file – without any additional file modifications.
- I upload this SVG directly to the Origami Simulator.
- I assign the three fold types (mountain - #ff0000/valley - #0000ff/edges - #000000) using the simulator′s color panel.
- I immediately get a ready-made animated 3D simulation of the folding process. It′s a tremendous time-saver!
However, there′s one specific aspect I haven′t fully mastered. It concerns the yellow auxiliary line (or #ffff00). From what I understand, it′s essential for accurately defining curved creases, while straight lines work perfectly without it. My issue is that I can′t seem to draw these curves with sufficient precision – my results are only rough approximations (see the attached screenshot for an example).
So, my questions to all, especially to those who have worked with complex curved patterns, are:
Has anyone deeply understood the logic behind these yellow guides for curves? What is their exact purpose and behavior?
Do you have a proven method or specific settings (in Inkscape or the simulator itself) to ensure Bezier curves are rendered and processed with maximum accuracy, rather than as approximations?
Are there any hidden nuances in SVG export settings that significantly affect the recognition quality of curved paths? I would be very grateful for any advice, links to tutorials, or shared experiences on this matter!
The only inconvenience of the origami simulator is that the record button overlaps the assembly status bar. ((
