General Information

IOIO 2025

The IOIO project was launched in the Russian Federation in 2010. It is entirely free for participants and open to anyone worldwide. Over the years, IOIO has become a major event in the origami community, attracting thousands of artists globally. Many participants have gained international recognition, making the Olympiad not just a competition but a platform for visibility. Challenge the best origami masters!

We engage with the community, analyze feedback, and periodically update rules to ensure fair, modern, and flexible competition conditions.

Stay updated, get inspired, and create — strict rules exist to let your paper art shine!

The latest information and final rules will be published in the Olympiad handbook.

General Provisions

1. Any type of paper may be used.

2. Participants are allowed to color and glue models, as long as it does not hinder the identification of all model elements (including pre-drawn lines that define the assembly process). This rule does not apply to the participant's own design.

3. Only photographs that have never been published before the olympiad are allowed.

4. Each model must be photographed from at least three angles to clearly display all details. Low-quality photographs will not be considered. The recommended size for photographs is between 640x640 and 1500x1500 pixels.

5. Minimal photo editing is allowed as long as it does not affect the appearance of the model. For example, you may crop photos, reduce noise, adjust color balance, but you must not add, erase, or alter any details.

6. Photographs must be uploaded before the end of the active round of the olympiad, according to the timer in the participant's profile.

7. Winners of the qualifying rounds are determined based on the quantity and quality of completed tasks.

8. Participants must not publish photographs of assemblies until the active round is over.

Rules published in the task collection always take precedence over rules published on the website.

Jury Composition

1. The jury is formed anew before the start of each IOIO.

2. Any individual may apply to join the jury. The decision to include a candidate in the jury is made by the IOIO organizing team.

3. Winners of any previous IOIO are entitled to join the jury.

4. Authors of works that serve as the tasks for the current IOIO are entitled to join the jury. They may evaluate the task featuring their own model and, at their discretion and upon prior agreement with the IOIO organizing team, any other task.

5. The list of jury members is published in the IOIO task booklet.

Judging Criteria

1. Compliance with the rules for participants

2. Execution technique

3. Neatness of the work

4. Artistic skill and aesthetic quality of the work

First Round Judging

1. The first round is judged by experienced jury members due to the need to process a potentially very large number of entries in the shortest possible time to commence the second round.

2. After the time allotted for participants to complete the round's tasks has ended, each jury member receives all photographs of the submitted works and a blank results table.

3. In the first round, each jury member is required to submit their completed table to the IOIO organizational center by the deadline specified in the internal IOIO instructions.

4. Participants who receive at least 1 vote from a jury member advance to the second round. The number of participants in the second round does not exceed 150.

Second Round Judging

1. The second round is judged by all jury members independently of one another.

2. After the time allotted for participants to complete the round's tasks has ended, each jury member receives all photographs of the submitted works and a blank scoring table.

3. Jury members who are part of the IOIO organizing team judge all tasks. Invited jury members may choose which tasks to judge, according to their expertise in various fields and techniques of origami, as well as their personal time constraints.

4. Each task has a maximum possible score for execution. This value depends on the task's complexity. Each jury member evaluates the execution based on the judging criteria and enters the score into the table.

5. When evaluating original works on a set theme, in addition to the criteria described earlier, the specific aspects of this task are considered:

  • Adherence to the set theme.
  • Depth and originality of the model's conception.
  • Technical complexity.
  • Presence and quality of assembly instructions (diagram, crease pattern, photo/video tutorial, description).

6. Each jury member must add bonus points to the scores of works they consider prize-worthy:

  • 1st place – 1 work – 30% of the maximum possible score (max.)
  • 2nd place – 2 works – 20% of max.
  • 3rd place – 3 works – 10% of max.

7. As an encouragement for participation, the following scores are awarded:

  • For a submitted attempt (base not folded) – 10% of max.
  • For a submitted folded base – 20% of max.

8. Works distinguished by original or striking execution may also be rewarded with no more than 1 additional point at the discretion of each jury member, in addition to other performance bonuses.

9. Each jury member is required to submit their completed scoring table to the IOIO organizational center by the deadline specified in the internal IOIO regulations.

10. The points awarded to a participant by each jury member for each task are summed. Based on these totals, the winners, prize recipients, and ranking for each task are determined. The number of prize placements determines the ranking for the team championship (by country).

11. All points awarded to each participant are summed. Based on these totals, the overall winner, prize recipients, and ranking for the IOIO individual championship are determined.

Presentation of Results

1. Upon completion of judging, the results of all participants are published in the form of a summary ranking table, along with the individual scoring tables of each jury member.

2. The winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd place) for each task are announced, and photographs of their works are published.

3. The winners in the individual and team (by country) championships are announced, and the top 10 ranking is published.

4. The winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd place) in the individual championship are awarded diplomas.

Disputed Issues

1. After the results are published, each participant has the right to appeal their own results within 24 hours. A review of the awarded scores will be conducted, and, if necessary, a score breakdown will be provided.

2. Participants who commit a gross violation of the competition rules and ethics are disqualified. Such violations include:

  • Plagiarism (in the «original work» task)
  • Submitting someone else's work
  • Use of AI in image processing, if detected by relevant software
  • Insulting participants or jury members in chats and social networks, and other unsportsmanlike conduct.
